Many thematic funds, public and private alike, could increase and improve their investments through more transparent criteria, and better information about eligibility and their procedures.

Many well-managed SMEs either do not know how to secure funding or are not investment-ready. These recognitions are at the origin of creating bettterfunds.

bettterfunds is originally the brainchild of co-founder Sören Bauer who realised and worked on the challenges that Development Finance Institutions DFI’s face when conceiving, communicating and promoting a large number of thematic funds.

In 2015 already, he started analysing and monitoring a broad variety of such funds - with a focus on dozens of ‘climate funds’, often, and rightly, criticised for being incomprehensible, lacking standardisation and transparency.

Sören met Haoua Mamoudou in summer 2025 in Abidjan; always keen to do new things, and bringing her experiences in corporate finance and investment management on board, Haoua joined in autumn 2025.

Her expertise enables bettterfunds to enlarge its vision and scope from an original focus on public funds to also include private funds and funding, particularly for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Africa and beyond.

Conceived as a digital platform - that will enable the matchmaking of those with investment needs with various kinds of intermediaries and with investors and the appropriate funding sources - bettterfunds’ search for a Chief Technical Officer CTO and third co-founder led them to Mahamadou Hatchabi. His understanding and experiences in the world of information technology, digital marketing and platform development enable bettterfunds to develop a first prototype of the envisioned platform, planned to go live in autumn 2026.
